David Shulkin is an American physician and government official who served as the United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs from 2017 to 2018. He was appointed by President Donald Trump and was the first non-veteran to hold the position.
Shulkin previously served as the Under Secretary of Veterans Affairs for Health in the Obama administration. He is a board-certified internist and has held leadership positions in various healthcare organizations, including as President and CEO of Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City.
Shulkin's tenure as Secretary of Veterans Affairs was marked by efforts to improve access to healthcare for veterans, increase accountability within the department, and address issues such as veteran homelessness and mental health care. However, he faced criticism for his management of the department and was ultimately fired by President Trump in March 2018.
